Our History

Ivy Gardens at Brown Recreation Center is a result of partnership between Sigma Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® and the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation.  Sigma Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® was awarded a ten thousand dollar grant in July 2016 in support of USDA’s “Peoples Gardens” initiative.  Our chapter sought out to collaborate with another local organization in an underserved community.  Our goal was to develop a sustainable community garden that will provide opportunities for all to cultivate nutritionally rich fruits and vegetables for the community.  We are fortunate that we were able to establish collaboration with the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation for a community garden at Brown Recreation Center – Ivy Gardens. It is through this partnership, we have been able to create a gardening experience for the community including those with physical limitations.  It is our hope to provide the community with better nutrition by providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables along with the knowledge of growing them.

Our Mission

The mission of the Sigma Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to be of “Service to all Mankind”. As service is our strength, we created Ivy Gardens in collaboration with our community partners as one demonstration of sustainable service by providing opportunities to cultivate nutritionally rich fruits and vegetables in Southeast Greensboro.
